Christian Horner believes that the new generation of F1 engines to be introduced in 2025 must have “emotion”, otherwise teams should “all go into Formula E”.
Current F1 engine suppliers and potential OEMs such as Porsche and Audi were all present at a meeting on the Austrian Grand Prix weekend to discuss the future of F1 powertrains.

After the race that Red Bull won to extend its winning streak to five in a row, Horner said: “I think it was a constructive dialogue.
“It is important that we find the right solution for the future of Formula 1 in terms of both cost and product. I think all the right stakeholders are involved in this discussion and it is important to work together for the good of the sport . ”
On Red Bull’s favorite option for the future of F1 powertrains, Horner added, “I think we see that the cost of the current engine is extremely prohibitive.
“It was not thought of when this engine was designed and I think there is a fantastic opportunity for what the engine could be for 10 years when it is introduced to do something different.
“I think it still has to address the emotion, the sound – yes, of course it has to tick the sustainability criteria, but I think it still has to be entertaining and I think otherwise we should all go to Formula E.
“Hopefully the collective minds can come up with something attractive for 2025 or what would be more sensible is to do the work properly for 2026.”
It’s a “shame” that Red Bull can no longer drive at home
Both of Max Verstappen’s victories on Red Bull home soil were dominant with a combined lead of 53 seconds in the two races.
Horner joked that he wished the Austrian venue could host more races after the form the team has shown.
“A really dominant weekend for us, but it worked well on this track,” commented Horner.
“It’s a shame that we don’t have any more races here, because I know that we are now driving on a track that has been a Mercedes stronghold for the past seven years.”
