F1 drivers “normally” don't choose teammates, are unsure about Mercedes: Alonso

For the past week, all eyes have been on the second Mercedes seat. Tensions have hit an all-time high as people keep wondering who Hamilton will be paired with. Will it be good old Valtteri who has proven to be a reliable second driver? Or will it be George Russell, a rising star with championship potential? On the street it is said that Hamilton wants to stay with Valtteri Bottas. But Alonso argues that you can’t choose your teammate in sports. “As a driver, you normally never have the option to choose your team-mate. You drive for your team and they always choose the teammate they think is appropriate for the good of the team and you have to accept that. “

Alonso is aware that things can be different at Mercedes. It’s no secret that Toto Wolff is extremely close to his star player Hamilton. Alonso says: “But I don’t know either the situation at Mercedes or the agreements they have.” Toto wants to promote Russell, but if Hamilton pushes Bottas, will he fold?

Bottas or Russell – who is the better option for Mercedes?

After the Hamilton-Rosberg era, Mercedes needed someone who was reliable, who could relieve the tension of the past three years. Valtteri did that. But it would be unfair to reduce its role to the team as just reliable. Valtteri is quick on his good days. The Finn flourished as a driver at Mercedes, with 9 wins with the team.

However, the 2021 season has so far been one of disappointments. In the driver standings he is currently in sixth place behind the two RedBull drivers. Mercedes could not afford that at the moment, given the immense pressure that is on them thanks to Max Verstappen.

What could bring George to Mercedes if they changed drivers? Russell’s talent was evident to the world when he replaced Lewis in Sakhir. it would be foolish to think that he wouldn’t do a good job at Mercedes. In addition, their current competition is a young, up-and-coming driver. Bringing in someone like George could help Mercedes gain a foothold in the championship.

However, Bottas does not get half the respect he deserves. He’s on a team that Lewis is the man on and finished second. Most of the problems he has faced this season were through no fault of his own. At the same time, Russell Mercedes is pointing the way to a completely different future. At the end of the day we just have to wait for Toto Wolff to select the driver he thinks is best suited for Lewis and the Silver Arrows.
