F1 driver Lewis Hamilton’s plan to revolutionize the sport

F1 driver Lewis Hamilton's plan to revolutionize the sport

Lewis Hamilton spent the days leading up to the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix waiting for a t-shirt in the mail. For the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, a man who would drive a technological marvel at 200 mph, this would normally not have been a priority. Race weekends are all about torque maps and tire compounds as well as timetables that are accurate to the minute.

But Mugello last summer was different. This was the season of protests against Black Lives Matter. The shirt he ordered was emblazoned with a message he’d seen on social media, but not even in the F1 travel bubble. It said in capital letters “Arrest the Officers Who Killed Breonna Taylor,” a tribute to the 26-year-old black medical worker who was shot and killed by police in Louisville, Kentucky, during a raid on her home. Hamilton, the only black rider in his sport, planned to wear it on the podium.
