Elliott replaces Allison as F1 Technical Director for Mercedes - Motorsport Week

Mercedes has announced a reorganization of its leadership positions, with Mike Elliott becoming its new technical director and James Allison taking on a redefined role within the organization.

Allison has been the Technical Director of Formula 1 at Mercedes since 2017, but will take over the position of Chief Technical Officer from July 1.

As a result, Allison will step down from the day-to-day management of Mercedes’ Formula 1 technical operations and instead focus on the new era of championship.

Mercedes said Allison will “work closely with Brackley and Brixworth’s technical leadership to ensure the team always has the right skills to meet their needs.”

Allison’s role will be played by Elliott, who joined Mercedes in 2012 after previously working at McLaren and Renault.

Elliott was head of aerodynamics at Mercedes for some time and has been its technology director since 2017.

“Since joining Mercedes in 2017, James has been an exceptional technical leader in our team and has made an enormous contribution to our performance,” said Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

“He combines great passion and determination with detailed expertise and exceptional moral character.

“We have known for some time that his time as Technical Director will come to an end this year, and I am delighted that we have been able to shape this new role so that he stays in our motorsport family.

“He will be an important sparring partner for me in the next few years, and I know that we still have a lot to achieve together.

“We often say that the organization is a dynamic organism and that we must continually adapt if we are to really thrive.

“Effective succession planning was one of our team’s strengths. I’m very excited to announce Mike in his new role as Technical Director.

“We met in early 2013 when I joined the team and have since spent many hours talking about the team and how it was developing.

“Mike has gone from being our head of aerodynamics to being a technical director.

“Together with an exceptional group of high-level technical executives, we are in the best possible position for the next era of sport.”
