
George Russell has showcased excellent performances in 2022 with the struggling Mercedes. But he regrets not fighting for the championship against frontrunners Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.

Russell came from the Mercedes driver academy and hoped to get a seat on the German team. So, Russell’s dream to drive for Mercedes came true, but the championship is still away from his grasp.

George Russell wants to fight Verstappen and Leclerc
Mercedes dominated F1 in the past season, and the 2021 constructors’ champion was their latest achievement. The German constructor wished to continue its dominance in 2022. They even got the young talent Russell to replace Valtteri Bottas. However, the seven races in 2022 didn’t meet their expectations.
The Silver Arrows drivers suffered to drive the W13, built following the latest regulations. George came to Brackley in hopes of fighting for the championship, but cannot do so. Hey shared, “If you had told me prior to the season that I wouldn’t have a win in the first seven races, I would certainly have been disappointed.”

Russell is suffering to drive the Mercedes car while the drivers around his age, Verstappen and Leclerc are fighting for the championship. The Red Bull driver is the current championship leader, while the Ferrari driver is only nine points behind.

George wants to join the fight at the front, but he can only work on improving himself for now. Russel shared, “Of course, I also want to fight for the championship with Verstappen and Leclerc, but we have to work together as a team for now. I still have to improve myself, so there is definitely more in the pipeline.”
The Spanish GP results impressed Russell
Russell is the better driver at the Brackley base this season than Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman even scored two podiums, one more than the seven-time world champion. The latest podium for Russel was in the Spanish GP, and he finished third there.

The 22-year-old was leading the race when Leclerc retired from the race. But he couldn’t keep the lead against the Red Bull duo and finished third. However, the car’s pace impressed the Brit.
He said, “Looking at the car’s speed, I’m quite happy with how we performed. We manage to maximize the results. I can’t remember a race where we should have scored better.”
