David Coulthard has insisted that there is “no doubt” that Max Verstappen will eventually win his first Formula 1 world title, and has welcomed his growing rivalry with Lewis Hamilton as a couple battle for the 2021 crown. But the Scot believes that if he suffers more misfortune before the end of the season, his bid for the World Cup could falter.

Hamilton leads the drivers’ standings with 10 races to go, but Verstappen is only three points behind the chase.

The 23-year-old has won six races this season compared to Hamilton’s four wins and has the best chance of claiming the crown so far in his short career.

Verstappen will no doubt have extra motivation when he drives for the first time at the Dutch Grand Prix at the Zandvoort circuit, with thousands of Dutch fans supporting the grandstands.

However, the drivers enter the race unknown after the Grand Prix was canceled last season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If Verstappen wins the race, he will regain the lead from Hamilton after suddenly having a 32-point lead after winning five straight races.

Max, son of former driver Jos Verstappen, became notorious for his aggressive driving style and was involved in several notable collisions with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

After drawing criticism from the seasoned couple in the past, Coulthard admits that his minor deviations caused some problems early in his racing career.

But after 15 wins for Red Bull since his debut in 2016, the expert-turned rider believes Verstappen’s pace proves he was worth holding on to.

“Like a puppy, like any young driver, he occasionally peed on the carpet, but it was also clear that he had great speed and great adaptability.

Hamilton was given a 10-second penalty by the stewards but struggled exceptionally through the field to take home the win.

And Coulthard, a 13-time race winner who raced with Williams and McLaren before starting the Red Bull team in 2005, has compared their struggle to some of the greatest in Formula 1 history.

“As a racing fan, it’s wonderful to be a witness,” added the Scot.

“The rivalry between Max and Lewis is already a classic. From people like Senna vs Prost or Mansell vs Piquet or whoever your era is in the history of time. “
