Christian Horner: ‘It is time for Toto Wolff to do something’

Christian Horner: 'It is time for Toto Wolff to do something'

Christian Horner believes that Toto Wolff and Mercedes drove too lightly in the turbo-hybrid era and joked that it was “time” to deal with some pressure.

The Red Bull team boss also recently said that the Silver Arrows winning cycle will end at some point, so he and his team will try to take advantage if Mercedes slips.

The battle on the track between Sir Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen already took shape in five fascinating races between the two in equally tuned machines, together with the newly established Red Bull Powertrains Division, the members of the Mercedes engines, Horner and Red Bull , poached have given the seven-time constructor champions a headache.

“Toto had it way too easy for the past seven years,” Horner said, according to the New York Times. “It is time he had something to do.”

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko claimed Mercedes offered “double pay” to keep workers, including engine manager Ben Hodgkinson, who took the step to become Red Bull Powertrains’ first technical director.

With a collective group of 900 employees working on the Mercedes engine, however, the Silver Arrows team boss remains unimpressed by the prospect of employees transferring to Red Bull’s new operation.

“It’s a huge organization,” said Wolff, “and losing 10 or 15 or more is not going to change the collective strength of the group.”

“In a way, it’s almost like a natural selection: people who avoid young people in order to move up, and we see that as a great opportunity. Achievement comes from group power, not individuals. “

The battle for the title between arguably the two best drivers on the grid was the main theme in Formula 1 this season. Verstappen took the lead in the drivers’ championship for the first time in his career after winning in Monaco over the weekend.

After not having had a real season battle for the title in recent years, Horner is thrilled with the prospect of two drivers getting him out of the record calendar for 23 races.

“I hope it goes to the wire,” added Horner. “The fans would like to see that, it’s what they screamed for, although I don’t know if my nerves could take it.

“There’s nothing more exciting than driving Lewis Hamilton and that’s what we want to do.”

“There are tracks that suit us and there are some that suit Mercedes,” said Horner. “I’m sure this championship will go up and down.”
