Sainz, unable to keep up with Hamilton and Verstappen on that final lap because of unlapped cars in his way, believes the whole thing could have been avoided had Masi red flagged the race instead of a safety car.
“I would have liked to have been behind them but with the cars lapped I couldn’t fight for the first win, especially when they crashed,” the Spaniard told Marca.
“It would have been fairer for Hamilton to have a red flag, maybe it would have been fairer to have a red flag with both at the same time at the end of the race.
“But the regulations don’t require that in this context if there isn’t too much dirt on the track, etc.”
However, he went on to say that he felt these regulations needed to be made clearer for teams and drivers going forward.
