Bottas wants to end Mercedes F1 career with a “really special” fifth title | F1

Since becoming teammates in 2017, Bottas and Lewis Hamilton have been unbeaten as Mercedes wins the constructors’ championship every year.

If Bottas and Hamilton are to secure the title, this will be the equivalent of Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello’s five-man ranks for Ferrari in the years 2000 to 2004.

Before the last two races of the season in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, Mercedes Red Bull is only five points ahead.

After Bottas leaves the team for Alfa Romeo at the end of the year, he wants to say goodbye to Mercedes with a fifth constructors’ crown in a row.

“That is important to me,” said Bottas. “Even if I leave, I am not giving up any goals that we have for this year. So a fifth title in a row would be something very special, better than four.

“So that’s definitely a goal and it’s also a motivation for me to keep pushing.”

While both races did not go quite according to plan for Bottas, Mercedes had the fastest car in Brazil and Qatar and won both with Hamilton.

The Finn is confident that Mercedes can maintain its strong form in Saudi Arabia as the high-speed nature of the route is expected to play to its strengths in Jeddah.

“Actually it was a bit of a surprise how good it was, but now it seems as if tracks with a high-speed component are pretty good for us and high-speed corners aren’t that bad either,” explained Bottas.

“That gives us a little hope for Saudi Arabia. I think we’re in good shape at the moment, we’ve got a good run, a good performance so we have to try to keep the good moment and the good work going.

“We learned a lot during the set-up, we set up the car a little differently today than we did at the beginning of the year, so we live and learn.”
