McLaren versus Ferrari
McLaren Racing and Scuderia Ferrari are currently at a standoff on the championship standings, with both teams earning 163 points after 11 races. Lando Norris has done a brilliant job for McLaren, scoring 10 out of 11 races so far. He’s also third in the drivers’ standings with 113 points and has managed to keep McLaren in the fight. In addition, his teammate Daniel Ricciardo did not perform as expected in the new team and was probably the driver who struggled the most with the team change. This has put pressure on the Australian to work close to his teammate’s level and help McLaren become the best of the rest team in the 2021 Formula 1 season.
Scuderia Ferrari had some problems with the car at the start of the 2021 season, but they managed to fight every race weekend. They had severe tire wear problems during the French GP, but the Maranello team improved the SF 21 over the weekend and came out with momentum at the Styrian GP. In addition, Charles Leclerc almost won the Silverstone GP, if not because of his lower racing speed compared to the Mercedes on the hard tires. Ferrari has improved a lot and quite dramatically over the course of the season and now they have Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc who are consistently delivering results most weekends. Ferrari’s tire issues could come to an end if Binotto confirms an upgrade that fixed them, though it can go over a single lap at the expense of time. That is, races are not won over a single lap.
Spa-Francorchamps is a performance-hungry track with a few slow corners and really long straights. So the chances are good that Ferrari is chasing the papaya-colored cars. But with Ferrari’s constant rate of improvement over the weekends, a clear favorite is a little hard to say and the draw for P3 in the championship standings explains the dilemma clearly.
