Fernando Alonso
After a two-year absence, Alonso returned to great expectations and did not disappoint, especially in a car he knew would have its moments when he got in but would for the most part hover on the verge of the top 10.
The two-time champion may not have won a race as his teammate Esteban Ocon did in Hungary when he took advantage of the carnage on lap one and corner one that played out at the event, but his persistence shone through.
Alonso was attacking and defensively strong when he was in control of the car, scoring solid points and with his podium in Qatar – his first in seven years – a welcome and fitting achievement for one of the best drivers of the last 20 years.
