The venture capital group ROKiT has teamed up with Sector3 Studios, the developer of the RaceRoom Racing Experience-Sim, to create a new esports competition for teenagers with a very special price: a seasonal contract for racing in Formula 4.
The series is called Racing Star and is open to all 14- and 15-year-olds who are British citizens and legally resident in the UK – but ROKiT, the title sponsor of the British F4 Championship, would like to expand the series to other areas in the future
To participate, all you need to do is download R3E on your PC. There are no additional costs and R3E itself is a free-to-play title. Players register themselves in the Sim’s special Racing Star area.
What is unique is that there will be two separate championships, each of which will draw its own pool of finalists: one for male drivers and one for female drivers.
The first phase of the series consists of five rounds of online competition, each with one qualification. Aside from the first round, which is already open and runs through February 1st, each of the events will consist of a two-week hot lap qualifying session from which the top 20 eligible times in each championship will be drawn.
This defines the list of participants for the final, which is broadcast live every 14 days, with a 10-minute training session, a 15-minute qualification and a final 30-minute race. In all cases, the players drive the Tatuus F4 as it is used in the Formula 4 championship itself.
The full schedule looks like this:
- Round 1 – Silverstone
- Qualification – January 1st – February 2nd
- Final – February 5th
- Round 2 – Red Bull Ring
- Qualification – February 2nd – February 16th
- Round 3 – Monza
- Qualification – February 16 – March 2
- Round 4 – Spa-Francorchamps
- Qualification – March 2nd – March 16th
- Round 5 – Hockenheim
- Qualification – March 16 – March 30
The players receive championship points for each round, and the 16 best drivers in the overall standings then advance to the grand finale. This will be a live event in May at the British National Center for Motorsport Engineering at the University of Bolton, where the drivers will fight for the title in professional “Racing Unleashed” simulators.
There are prizes for a ROKiT e-bike for the top ten and the chance to race for second and third place in a kart championship, but the best driver and the best female racing driver each win the main prize of a seat in the ROKiT F4 Racing Team (currently Hitech GP) for the British Formula 4 Championship 2023.
Each winner also receives an intensive six-month training program from the British motorsport umbrella organization Motorsport UK, which includes their competition license and track training in karts and F4 cars.
It’s a remarkable price. F4 represents one of the entry levels on the motorsport ladder, with a seasonal cost for a driver typically in excess of £ 200,000. Here, however, young drivers are noticed and can easily lead into a future in open-wheel racing; the first British F4 champion was none other than McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris.
