Three of the six titles to be won in the GT World Challenge season this season have already been determined, the other three will come to an end this month.
The first of these will be the sprint title in Europe, with a final showdown race on the Circuit Spa-Francorchamps. This tenth race of the season will determine whether McLaren’s James Baldwin or Ferrari’s David Tonizza will take the crown, with the two only separated by two points.
It’s been quite a two-half season, Tonizza won three of the first four races and Baldwin won three of the last five. Last time in Barcelona it was almost impossible to separate them all for long as Baldwin was just the winner, which made it difficult to call the race that week. We will find out who of the two will become regional sprint champions on November 12th together with Dayne Warren (Asia) and Michael Kundakcioglu (America).
Europe’s long-distance champion has already been determined, Tonizza and Giovanni de Salvo’s Ferrari Driver Academy team take the title, but both the Asia and America trophies have yet to find a home.
After two of the three races in the Americas Series have taken place, the SideMax x Black Hawk Racing McLaren of Chris Severt and Tinko van der Velde leads the championship thanks to two strong podium places with six points. However, should any of the next three cars – the # 93 HPD JAS Pro America NSX, the Kings of Asphalt Aston Martin or the PPR Esports Purple Mercedes – win at Laguna Seca on November 20th, they’ll win the championship too. Both the HPD and Kings of Asphalt teams have already won this season, and the PPR Purple team was in the mix but suffered from a bizarre incident at Bathurst so it’s likely to be a close competition.
In the meantime, the Asia Endurance Series has two laps to go, with the Bathurst race next week and the Suzuka event postponed two weeks later. With just one race completed, it’s Full Pace Racing that has the edge, with JMX Phantom in second and Legion of Racers in third.
It was a close race between the three, with the next car almost a minute behind, and it seems likely that the title will eventually go to one of those teams – the Legion of Racers car is a pre-season favorite thanks to a driver Pairing of Dillan Tan and sprint runner-up Andika Rama Maulana – but it’s too early to tell.
