The Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda Team overcame difficult conditions at the 2021 Portuguese Grand Prix With Pierre Gasly Qualification in ninth place. Yuki Tsunoda driving for the first time on Autódromo Internacional do Algarve Circuit could only finish in fourteenth place.
The AlphaTauri team is in an uphill battle for third place with the Scuderia Ferrari and McLaren F1 Team. The Italian team did not maximize the points positions in the first two races of the season. The team is currently in fifth place in the constructors’ championship.
Guillaume DezoteuxThe AlphaTauri team’s vehicle performance manager was pleased with the progress the team had made from training sessions to qualifying as they worked hard on changes to the setup.
Dezoteux said: “After a difficult Friday, the team worked to get the most out of our qualifying package today. In the third RP we saw that we were taking a step in the right direction, but making the soft tire the way we wanted it was still a challenge. We made further adjustments to the car and concentrated on preparing tires for qualifying. We made further progress with both drivers.
“The first quarter was not easy as both Yuki and Pierre had traffic in addition to the difficult conditions. Yuki had big problems in the second quarter and couldn’t make much progress. Unfortunately, he finished 14th. In the meantime, Pierre managed to get into the third quarter but never put together the perfect lap in the last practice session.
“Tonight we will review the various racing scenarios and the goal will be to finish in the points. Last year Pierre had a solid race starting from the same position. So we want to do this again. It will be more difficult for Yuki, who starts further back, but we know he can overtake great and hopefully can make his way up into the points. “
The AlphaTauri team needs Tsunoda to fight back in the race, and both drivers need to score points to hold their own in the tight midfield battle.
