This McLaren Speedtail paint job lasted 12 weeks

Now that we’ve got the introductions out of the way, it’s time to appreciate the pure craftsmanship that Albert’s builders exuded in assembling the final product.

McLaren says one of the most time-consuming processes in the entire build was painting the car, which took a staggering 12 weeks from start to finish. The carbon fiber body of the Speedtail was left untouched until the team conducted rigorous paint experiments on sacrificial test plates.

The first two weeks were spent just masking the car, which needed to be completed with the wheels mounted to make sure the design flowed properly around the vehicle. Two technicians performed this process, using large format printed renderings to ensure the masking was as expected. More than a mile of duct tape was used along the way.

Next, the car was dismantled and painting started. The front end of the Speedtail was painted in Ueno Gray and mixed with Magnesium Silver in the rear. This process took around six weeks. The rest of the time was devoted to drying and assembling.
