This 240-mile McLaren F1 could sell for more than $ 15 million

In 2019, a Platinum Silver Metallic McLaren F1 became the most expensive example of the groundbreaking Gordon Murray-designed three-seater ever sold, fetching $ 19.8 million at auction. It was as fine a specimen as you’d hope, given its status as one of two LM spec street cars. However, that car’s crown will be challenged later this week when a lesser-traveled F1 crosses the auction block, where its consignors expect it to bring in “over $ 15 million”.

The car we’re talking about is Chassis 029, the 25th McLaren F1 road car produced, which has been coated with a one-off Creighton Brown paint job named after one of the executives who brought McLaren to road vehicles. The 029 was in a collection in Japan for most of its existence, has been “carefully maintained and seldom driven”, as the odometer reading of 387 kilometers shows. That’s 240.5 miles or less than a tenth of the distance that the victorious F1 covered at the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours.

Now US-owned, 029 is still as meticulously maintained and will be marketed later this week at Pebble Beach Auctions outside of Monterey, California. There it will be auctioned by Gooding & Company along with the assembled luggage, the instruction manual, a TAG Heuer watch and the special service equipment of the car – not a word about whether it contains the required vintage Compaq laptop.

The auction itself begins Friday evening and runs through Saturday afternoon, where F1 029 could set a record for the most expensive McLaren ever sold. A more valuable record, like the most-driven F1, is still within reach, though something tells us that the kind of bidders looking for one-off low mile items are more interested in looking at their cars than driving them .
