A JAGUAR XJ220 BREAKS RECORDS AT GOODWOOD
A 1993 Jaguar XJ220 Coupe with only 385 miles on the clock broke sales records at this year’s Goodwood Revival in West Sussex, England. The ’90s supercar sold for a whopping £ 460,000 in the Bonhams Revival Sale and is the world’s most expensive XJ220 to ever sell at auction.
The monzarote XJ220 in question had two previous owners, the first of whom kept the car in a dehumidified collection in Germany. Over the course of almost three decades, the vehicle underwent servicing in 1994 and later serviced with the engine out in 2019 after the last owner purchased the car in 2015. the underrated super sports car of the 90s
The Jaguar XJ220 has earned its place as the iconic supercar of the 90s among collectors and enthusiasts, but it is definitely one of the more underrated when compared to other models of the era. What exactly is it that makes the XJ220 so special?
the car started out as a V12 powered all-wheel drive concept by jaguar’s then head of product development, jim randle. after supposedly “unprecedented media attention” and strong customer demand, the concept for the production was developed, but with some adjustments to randle’s original vision. the V12 engine was replaced by a smaller and lighter V6 with twin turbocharging and the all-wheel drive was swapped for rear-wheel drive. The mid-engined car was named the XJ220 because it was supposed to have a top speed of 220 mph. in reality, the Super never quite reached that number, but it did record a top speed of 212.3 mph, making it the fastest production car for a year to the McLaren F1.
Fewer than 300 XJ220s were made due to disappointing sales. However, with its classic, sleek look and increasing collector’s ability, it’s no wonder this underrated supercar of the 90s is now breaking sales records.
