The McLaren F1 is still the king of supercars

The McLaren F1 is still the king of supercars

Since the McLaren F1 debuted in the early 90s, many have tried to improve it. While some manufacturers have come close, there is no other car that delivers the same experience, even 30 years later. Let this latest review by Carfection’s Henry Catchpole remind you why.

In the first of three videos, in which the three most famous street cars of the nineties are compared – the F1, the Porsche 911 GT1 and the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR – Catchpole goes into exactly what makes the F1 so special. After a detailed tour of the three-seater interior of the car, he sets off. He indulges in the superb sound of the naturally aspirated V-12 and praises the high-precision, user-friendly steering offered by the F1’s relatively thin tires.

The F1 is the most road-facing of the three, though its high-tension engine and undulating suspension can make it annoying to drive hard on wet surfaces, according to Catchpole. The gearshift, while slick with the rifle bolt, can also be a little tricky at times. However, it’s still an overwhelmingly enjoyable experience.

This particular car, chassis 037, has spent some time in Germany, South Africa, California and the UK. It is the only F1 to receive a full Alcantara interior from the factory, and one of the few F1s that have been kept in their original color combination, according to DK Engineering.

Countless supercars have been introduced since the arrival of the F1, and while many have driven faster and set faster lap times, none have been able to match the sensations conveyed to the driver as well as Gordon Murray’s creation. We are curious to see whether its direct successor, the T.50, can keep up.
