The exciting story of the stripped wheel nut of Valtteri Bottas’ Formula 1 car is finally over. The Mercedes-AMG F1 team posted a video on Instagram today in which the team finally removed the jammed nut that secures the wheel to the right front corner of car # 77.

The mother was trapped during Bottas’ pit stop at the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend after the wheel pistol was mounted “at a slight angle” by one of the pit crew members, according to Motorsport.com, forcing the Finnish driver to do 30 laps to retire The team tried to remove the wheel. The gun removed the mother’s teeth, effectively rounding the part and making it impossible to remove in the pit lane. The mother was so trapped that the Mercedes pit crew couldn’t leave her in the garage. She decided to ship the car back to the UK factory and instead use heavy duty machinery to solve it.

“Eventually [at Monaco] We came to the conclusion that we would need some pretty heavy equipment and specialized equipment to remove this nut, and that would be better here at the plant, “James Vowles, Mercedes F1 team strategy leader, told Motorsport.com.

The team plans to analyze the wheel nut design and its removal process in the future to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.

“”[This] gives us the opportunity to do an autopsy to really understand how this nut was carried and to gather some clues so we can do a better job in the future, “added Vowles.
