The fastest cars in the world in 2021

The fastest cars in the world in 2021

Bugatti

Once upon a time, traversing the length of roughly a soccer field per second was the benchmark for the supremacy of sports cars. Reaching two hundred miles per hour used to be an achievement that only a few production cars could unlock. In fact, it didn’t happen until the 1987 Ferrari F40, aided by bare bones and a color so thin you could see through it.

How times change. Nowadays, many plush sports sedans can kiss close to 200 mph – or rather, many could, if not, have speed limiters holding them back to more sensible speeds like 155 or 186. Modern supercars and hypercars aren’t that restricted; Most of them can crack the double century with ease. Here in 2021 we have reached a new normal where 200 meh is; 300 mph is the top pace.

Is traveling ashore a noble boast in the name of science or a youthful imagination? Has the pursuit of maximum land speed been built into human DNA since our first steps out of the mother continent? No disrespect for 200 mph, but it’s not what it used to be. At least not for one of these vehicles – the fastest production cars in the world.

2019 Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+

Top speed: 304.77 mph
Power:
1,578 hp
Engine:
8.0 liter quad turbo W16
Weight:
4,544 lbs
Units built:
30 planned

Bugatti may have developed carpal tunnel syndrome over the years by dropping the microphone every time it set a new speed record for production cars. The youngest and (so far) best example is the current owner of the title “Fastest Car in the World”: the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+. The nickname is not accidental: this car is great, it’s sporty – and it goes over 300.

It’s a hyped version of their “normal” Chiron, which is a beast in itself but limited to just 261 mph. To reach more than 300 mph, Bugatti engineers had to make various fluid dynamic improvements to the design, including stretching the body lengthways nearly 10 inches to allow the laminar flow to flow over a longer surface, thereby causing the aerodynamic stall has been reduced by more than 40 percent. The new rear diffuser has a redesigned exhaust configuration that is designed to generate negative lift and at the same time further reduce air resistance. Orange vertical paintwork and bare carbon fiber serve as visual distinguishing features.

2020 SSC Tuatara

Top speed: 282.9 mph
Power:
1,350 hp
Engine:
5.9 liter twin turbo V8
Weight:
2,750 lbs
Units built:
Still in production

Like the US census, SSC gives us something to discuss every ten years. Twice in their 20-year history they have built the fastest production car in the world – and although SSC is not a player in the pantheon of legendary automakers. These notes bring them into conversation.

An owner of Tuatara at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida got the most out of his record run. The Tuatara’s gearbox has been adjusted to accommodate the short 2.3-mile runway. Racelogic, Life Racing, Garmin and IMRA certified the results of a two-pass top speed run. Why so many certifiers? Well, SCC previously claimed a top speed of 316 mph, which was later rejected. As I said, they give all of us something to discuss.

2017 Koenigsegg Agera RS

Top speed: 277.87 mph
Power:
1,160 hp
Engine:
5.0 liter twin turbo V8
Weight:
3.075 lbs
Units built:
25th

In contrast to Bugatti’s run, which was carried out on the massive Ehra-Lessien test track of the VW Group in Germany, the Swedish Dieder door favorite Koenigsegg reached its official top speed in the USA on a public road while chugging the E85. The closed section of Highway 160 outside of Pahrump, Nevada, was the stage for an average of two high-speed passes. The record was achieved with an owner’s car, but with full technical support from Koenigsegg and Michelin. A Racelogic representative was on site to install VBox data collection devices and independently verify the data.

2014 Hennessey Venom GT

Top speed: 270.49 mph
Power:
1,244 hp
Engine:
7.0 liter twin turbo V8
Weight:
2,743 lbs
Units built:

For 30 years, NASA’s 15,000-foot Shuttle Landing Facility has been home to historic takeoffs and touchdowns. Now decommissioned, it has become a private playground for those who want the terminal’s acceleration. The Hennessey Venom GT, built by Hennessey Performance of Sealy, Texas – essentially a converted Lotus Exige with optimized aerodynamic components and a shoe-horned twin-turbo V8 behind the seats – was able to reach 270 mph on this stretch. Note, however, that the Guinness Book of Records was available to certify the run with a Racelogic Vbox. It should be noted, however, that speed was only achieved on one pass – it wasn’t the average of two speeds that Guinness preferred.

2010 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Supersport

Top speed: 267.85 mph
Power:
1,183 hp
Engine:
8.0 liter quad turbo W16
Weight:
4,850 lbs
Units built:
40

The Bugatti Veyron that preceded the Chiron was no stranger to recording speed; Even the first Veyron, introduced in 2005, could pinch 235 mph. A key ingredient for their secret sauce is a key: to get top speed, the 16.4 Super Sport and its predecessor use a special key to activate a system check and subtly put the outside air pockets in low drag mode.

Some Super Sport changes include more carbon fiber for less weight and bigger turbos for more power. Aerodynamics have also been tweaked, as a slippery silhouette is crucial when you weigh almost two and a half tons. This record run was carried out on Volkswagen’s German test track with full Guinness Book of Records certification.

2007 SSC Ultimate Aero

Top speed: 256.14 mph
Power:
1,180 hp
Engine:
6.2 liter V8 supercharger
Weight:
2,749lbs
Units built:
Unknown

In retrospect, we’d like to call the SSC Ultimate Aero a shoddy, exhilarating disruptor in the industry – but all it bothered was air molecules at 256 mph. It wasn’t for nothing that the Ultimate Aero was a purpose-built hypercar. Even so, it looked like a refrigerator, the interior appeared to be from a 1980s marina, and a heavily tuned Corvette engine. Even so, he managed to run an impressive top-speed race on a public road in east Washington, the testimony of which was the Guinness Book of Records.

1993 McLaren F1

Top speed: 240 mph
Power:
618 hp
Engine: 6.0 liter V12
Weight:
2,509 lbs
Units built:
65

English test driver Andy Wallace, who drove the McLaren GTR at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, said this about its road variant: “This is the best car ever made … and it will probably never be beaten.”

To be fair, he made that statement in 1998 after driving the Mclaren F1 XP5 at top speed on Volkswagen’s test track in Germany. More than 20 years later, the F1 remains a cornerstone for collectors and an enthusiastic touchstone. Technology has advanced, and as you’ve seen there are cars with higher top speeds. Nonetheless, thanks to the unique vision of designer Gordon Murray and a naturally aspirated BMW V12, McLaren managed it with a certain level of safety. The latter makes it the fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine to date.
