The rise and rise of McLaren Automotive has got to be the cheekiest comeback for an automaker in the 21st century. Before 2010 they were known as “McLaren Cars” and gave us iconic and mind-blowing units like the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR-McLaren. But apart from these two offers, the word “McLaren” was seldom returned in the automotive world, despite its fame that could easily be rivaled that of Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

But after 2010 it was time for the British brand to make a comeback. While their first offering – the McLaren MP4-12C – was riddled with issues, they quickly fixed it. And that’s why McLaren gave us some of the most interesting performance machines on the market. And their unmistakable design language paired with bright colors lets the world know of the rise of a driver’s paradise.

McLaren is back with its newest “Alien” – the 2022 765LT Spider. While convertibles are nothing new to the brand, the 765LT Spider stands out as the most powerful top-down McLaren ever. The 765LT Spider combines McLaren’s alienated appearance and flaunts the convertible look like a boss. This is likely to be the coolest convertible in a long time.

The 2022 McLaren 765LT Spider is the fastest new “alien” in town that brings the top-down look to the point.

McLaren has pumped out insane cars for the past decade. Among its line of supercars, the 720S was the height of insanity with explosive performance and a killer look to die for. And we thought McLaren had reached its prime! They proved us wrong with the even crazier 765LT which was basically a more aggressive 720S with a long tail! The 765LT weighed under 3000 pounds and packed a V8 that was available with 754 horses.

Now, with the 2022 McLaren 765LT, you’ve done it again! McLaren is pushing the threshold further and further and has given us their most powerful convertible to date. It’s not just a roof chop job, but has meticulously tweaked it to keep the power and curb weight in line with its coupe counterpart despite the additional motors for the roof lowering mechanism.

The McLaren 765LT uses the same 4.0 liter V8 engine with two turbochargers from the 720S. This feat continues in the 765LT Spider. In general, performance stats decrease on a convertible iteration due to added weight and aerodynamic constraints. But surprisingly, the 2022 765LT Spider retains the performance values (even has 1 additional horsepower!).

It delivers 755 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. The Spider manages 0-60 MPH in 2.7 seconds and has a top speed of 205 MPH, unchanged from that of the Coupé. The driving characteristics are heavenly and the top-down layout adds more drama to the entire experience.

The transformation takes 11 seconds; Only adds 108 pounds of weight

McLaren uses a one-piece retractable carbon fiber hardtop that is extremely light and slightly offsets the additional motorized setup. The electrically operated roof lowers or raises in just 11 seconds and up to a speed of 31 MPH. So it can take a little “gust of wind”. The more interesting part is the weight gain. In general, weight gain is not a good sign of a supercar. But the difference in weight between a generic coupe and its convertible counterpart was quite large and disrupted performance.

McLaren has taken this down to the bare minimum, adding only 108 pounds. In perspective, the 720S Spider, which also offers aggressive weight-saving benefits, is 176 pounds heavier than the 765LT Spider! McLaren also opted for a titanium exhaust system, which saves more weight compared to a steel setup. The result? A splendid symphony of the V8 orchestra from the coolest quad exhaust layout among supercars.

The interior gets weight-saving bits and you get infinite headroom

The 2022 McLaren 765LT Spider has minimal changes in technology and interior, aside from the infinite headroom that comes with the roof closed! Additionally, McLaren managed to shave a few extra pounds on the inside to make up for the extra 11-second topless drama. It gets carbon fiber racing seats, carbon fiber center tunnel, exposed carbon floor and light Alcantara all around. Even air conditioning and an audio system are not included as standard, all for the love of weight saving! Related: The 8 Crazy Features That Make the McLaren Elva a One-of-a-Kind Supercar

Clever aerodynamics and killer looks combined without a roof

The 765LT Spider gets the same carbon fiber aerodynamics package as the coupe, which includes front flitter, side skirts, rear splitter and diffusers at both ends. The front track has been widened, which ensures a lower ride height and thus better aerodynamic efficiency.

McLaren has also given him ultralight, forged 10-spoke alloy wheels with custom-made Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires as standard. Even the active rear wing was calibrated differently for both the roof and roof-down layout. As for looks, McLarens have always been sexy looking aliens who kill the pop colors very well. And this alien is no different.

Limited to 765 units, the 2022 765LT Spider starts at $ 382,500

The McLaren 765LT Spider 2022 will be limited to just 765 units and only a third of those will be offered in the US. It starts at an MSRP of $ 382,500, but we all know that a decently equipped model will easily break the $ 500,000 mark thanks to the unlimited customization options offered by the McLaren Special Operations Division. MSP Clubsport Pack and MSP LT Black Pack are two of the predefined packs on offer. If you are planning on getting one, you better go quick; Because this thing won’t last long!
