Otmar Szafnauer felt Lance walk drove ‘brilliantly’ during the tricky Sunday Turkey Grand Prix, the Canadian getting two points for that Aston Martin Cognizant Formula 1 team despite a slow pit stop that cost him valuable time.
However, Sebastian VettelHis chance for points came to an end when a risk to switch to medium tires backfired and the German fell like a stone on his final lap. On his pit lap he got off the track twice and had to crawl back into the pit lane to get fresh intermediate tires. Having no tire temperature, he even suffered a half spin in the pits and was limited to running in the back of the field for the rest of the day.
Szafnauer, CEO and Team Principal of Aston Martin, says Vettel’s risk didn’t pay off, which sometimes happens when the conditions are as changeable as in Turkey, but at least the team took points from the weekend.
“Lance drove superbly in incredibly difficult conditions and, despite a slow pit stop, scored two valuable championship points thanks to his excellent ninth place,” said Szafnauer.
“Sebastian also started well and drove in a solid top 10 position in the first half of the race, but then he risked switching to dry tires [Mediums] which didn’t work – he had no hold at all. As a result, he had to come in again on the next lap for new Inters, but at this point his race was too badly affected for a point classification to be possible.
“It was one of those things: a risk that just didn’t pay off, that’s how it works sometimes when the conditions are so difficult.”
