"Seven of the 10 guys aren’t even on social media" - Zak Brown urges Liberty Media to set up non-technical advisory groups

“Seven of the ten guys are not even on social media” – McLaren F1 boss Zak Brown has proposed the establishment of advisory groups for non-technical areas such as social media.

Zak Brown is a veteran of racing management. He managed to get McLaren Racing to where they are now after more than a decade of pathetic failure – both in racing and commercial. As an entrepreneur, he is also lively present on social media.

When it comes to Formula 1, most decisions outside of the race track are also made by the team leaders. This is something Brown is not convinced of as most TPs have a technical background. Instead, he recommended the establishment of advisory groups for non-technical areas such as commerce and the media.

“I feel very comfortable with Formula 1 as a company, but sometimes the teams have the greatest say. When I look at the 10 people at the table, there is certainly nowhere near the commercial expertise.

“We’re going to be in a meeting and talking on social media. I’m just using this as an example, and you’ve probably got seven of the ten people at the table who aren’t even on social media.

“But that’s exactly what drives our social media conversations. I think the sport could use having a marketing council, an advisory group, whatever you want to call it, of people who are knowledgeable.”

“Much of what Formula 1 has done that I think is right as a consumer-oriented company, they go to fans and have asked fans. You asked avid fans as well as what you call trending fans who are more like your Netflix audience, people who are adjusting to Formula One. A lot of the ideas they have come from the fan base.

“In my opinion [that] is the right way to make decisions. It’s not 10 people sitting in a room deciding what hundreds of millions of people want.

“If you’re Unilever, the CEO doesn’t try the deodorant and chooses ‘perfect’. You go out there and do consumer research. Formula One under Chase’s tenure began to really use consumer and fan research to get food for thought.

“I think, as a result of a social media strategy, I would have a lot more confidence in a group that is really savvy and involved with social media than seven out of ten people who are not even into social media.”
