Scottish company that makes leather for high-end sports cars wins low-carbon races

A company that produces the leather for top sports cars is 20 years ahead of the country’s net-zero ambitions.

Scottish Leather Company, which makes the interiors of the McLaren F1 fleet, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and DeLorean DMC-12, is now the world’s lowest producer of carbon leather.

The Renfrewshire company will be carbon neutral by 2025 – 20 years ahead of Scotland’s net zero target.

Its luxury leathers are also used by 160 airlines, in buses, coaches and trains, in the shipping and furniture industries, as well as in hotels, restaurants and government buildings.

Dr. Warren Bowden, Director of Innovation, said, “Sustainability will be the focus of decision-making in the future and a linear approach to landfill waste is not accepted.

“In the manufacturing industry in particular, there is a great responsibility for acting quickly, but there is also the opportunity to exceed the net-zero targets in order to help achieve customer-oriented environmental goals.”

The company, which owns the Bridge of Weir Leather, Lang and Muirhead brands, could achieve eco-friendly leather manufacturing in four years after capturing a carbon footprint of just 1.1 kg of CO2 per skin – a 90 percent reduction compared to 10.3 kg in 20 years ago.

Initiatives include a thermal power plant that converts waste into heat and a water treatment and recycling facility.

More than 80 percent of the waste is diverted from the landfill.
