
The Australian has had a challenging Imola weekend so far. Team mate Lando Norris was faster than him on the two days of action.
And although Ricciardo outperformed Norris, it was only because his teammate had canceled his best time because of a violation of the small track restrictions at Turn 9.
Ricciardo has confessed that he needs more confidence in his McLaren and he believes delivering that he needs to wipe away much of the approach he previously had to driving different cars.
“I’m not trying to use past excuses, but there are probably some old habits that I still need to flush out and things that may not work that well for this car,” said the Australian. who will start sixth for the race on Sunday.

“I think it gets better with every lap I do. When will I perfect it? Hopefully sooner rather than later, but of course I think the more laps I do, the faster and faster I get.
“Hopefully then we’ll see the real potential because it’s encouraging to be in the mix.
“There’s a lot to look forward to this year – I think the sport in general is pretty close so I’m fine with that.
“I’m definitely happy with the progress we’ve made [so far this weekend]and there is more to come. I will be patient yet persistent. “

“I think the thing that gives me confidence is to examine the car’s potential – it’s there and it’s pretty good and it can do more than I think, as far as it just gets more speed through the corners and the car I will stay, ”he said.
“I think there is a bit of confidence in the car [to come]but I don’t think it’s like turning around and closing your eyes and it will stay. Much of it is also technology. “
