Report: Lawrence Stroll Set to End Aston Martin’s Painful F1 Stint Amid Rising Audi Interest

Aston Martin has been around the Formula 1 block a few times. The individual team returned to the sport in 2021 under the ownership of Lawrence Stroll. However, they have not fared well on the big stage. The competition is stiff and even with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel on the team, Aston Martin is hardly making any waves. And this is probably why Lawrence Stroll will try to recoup his investment.

A two-year cameo for Aston Martin coming to an end?

Looking back, Aston Martin made its F1 debut back in 1959. But they abandoned the sport without earning a single point. Fast forward to 2016, Aston Martin became Red Bull’s title sponsor till 2020. But the very next year, the brand itself entered the sport under the ownership of Lawrence Stroll.

However, with consistently poor performances, Lawrence is planning to sell the team. Especially with the popularity of the sport and the VW group planning to enter F1, it might be the best time for Lawrence to recoup his investment.

“In the end, Stroll is also a businessman and the investment would pay off like that. The hype surrounding Formula 1 is currently great, so it can fetch a good price,” says Sky expert Ralf Schumacher.

Audi has initially offered 450 million euros to gain a foothold in the British team, Mclaren. However, Mclaren did not want to give up decision-making power completely. This is why Audi shifted its focus to Aston Martin. Although, Williams and Alfa Romeo remain on Audi’s shortlist if Aston Martin does not agree.

Red Bull and Porsche edge closer

“It wasn’t long ago that VW said yes. Therefore it is a logical situation for two partners like Porsche and Red Bull to enter into talks. That will happen now,” says Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko.

It is almost certain that Red Bull and Porsche will be in a comprehensive partnership. The joint hybrid engines will be built at the Red Bull Powertrains plant at Milton Keynes. And the power units will be used by both Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri.

It will be interesting to see which brand will enter the pinnacle of motorsport next.
