Red Bull’s juniors need “another year or two” before F1 chances – Tost

AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost believes drivers in the Red Bull junior driver program all require another year until they could be in serious contention for a race seat in Formula 1.

After it was announced that Pierre Gasly would leave AlphaTauri at the end of the season to join Alpine, the team signed Nyck de Vries to their second 2023 seat alongside Yuki Tsunoda, despite Red Bull having multiple junior drivers in Formula 2.

Tost says that the team considered all Red Bull junior drivers for the seat but decided that De Vries was a better option due to his greater level of experience.

“All the Red Bull young drivers were taken into consideration,” Tost said. “There’s Liam Lawson, there’s [Ayumu] Iwasa, there’s [Dennis] Hauger in Formula 2, then [Isack] Hadjar in Formula 3, but they all still miss experience.

“They need to do another year or two in their categories and then we will see what the future will bring.”

Alonso protege Bortoleto wins second FREC race at Catalunya

Gabriel Borteloto won the second Formula Regional European Championship race of the weekend at Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, ahead of R-ace team mate Hadrien David as the race finished behind the Safety Car.

Borteloto, who is managed by Fernando Alonso’s A14 Management venture, won from pole position, holding off Alpine junior driver David until a late Safety Car when Victor Barnier ended up in the gravel at turn five. Championship leader Dino Beganovic finished tenth, meaning the championship will be decided in the final round in Mugello.

Ferrari academy driver Beganovic has a 39 point advantage over Gabriele Mini, with Mercedes junior Paul Aron and David all fewer than ten points behind Mini.

Man arrested for selling fake Formula 1 tickets worth €70,000 (NL Times)

“Police arrested a 23-year-old man suspected of selling 70,000 euros in fraudulent tickets to Formula 1 races. In some cases he delivered fake tickets, while in other cases he delivered nothing at all. Thirty people reported to the police victims as thus far. The suspect conducted the transactions on social media, claiming to have tickets for the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.”

David Coulthard makes FIA demand on behalf of F1 fans after ‘silly’ decision (Express)

“We are in the entertainment business. Last week, we knowingly sat waiting for the tide to go out before the boat was launched – we knew the rain was coming – that was a little bit silly. And, yes, what happened after the race keeps people engaged and gives us all something to talk about. But, in pure sporting terms, it’s bad.”

Something’s rotten in the world of F1 — dramatic finishes to lengthy season schedule (The Print India)

“In the name of entertainment and contriving storylines, F1 cannot lose the essence of the sport, and I fear that it is treading down that path. Back in the mid-1990s, there were only four or five channels on cable television. Today, one is overwhelmed by content, excellent content at that. But the best content is the most genuine content, and that is something that the F1 media rights owners and administrators should remember.”
