While the DTM’s switch to GT3 machines in 2021 helped bring Audi, Mercedes and BMW back into the championship, Porsche was the most obvious German manufacturer to be missing from this year’s starting grid.
That will change at the fourth round of the season from August 20-22, when the Munich SSR Performance Team will be guests with the latest 911 variant.
The team supported by Manthey stunned the field in the GT Masters last year and won both the team and driver titles in its debut season with Ammermüller and works Porsche driver Mathieu Jaminet.
Ammermüller, three-time Porsche Supercup champion and race winner in the GP2 series, is now making his DTM debut at the age of 35.
The German driver was briefly part of Red Bull’s Formula 1 junior team, but a broken wrist in 2007 meant that he was eventually excluded from the program.

“I am very happy that SSR Performance has chosen me as a driver for the DTM guest participation. It will be my first race weekend in this series, it will definitely be a big challenge, ”said Ammermüller.
“A perfect preparation was not possible due to the limited time, the regulations are different. That will definitely make it exciting and interesting. I will be highly motivated for my participation in the Nürburgring. “
Team owner Stefan Schlund was at the DTM Lausitzring race last month and would like to take advantage of the series’s increased media attention to the GT Masters.
“I have very good memories of the DTM, in which I have been actively involved for many years,” said Schlund.
“Now we hope for a super exciting race weekend with our young SSR Performance Team. In particular, we hope to be able to make a contribution to the region with the first racing event after the severe weather disaster. “
With SSR Performance, the DTM expects a bumper field of 23 cars at the former Grand Prix venue in Germany.

This includes 19 full-season races, including the JP Motorsport McLaren from Christian Klien, the HRT Mercedes from team owner Hubert Haupt and another one-of-a-kind Mercedes-AMG GT3 from Toksport for Luca Stolz.
A total of seven manufacturers are represented at the Nürburgring, plus the four major German brands Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes as well as Lamborghini, McLaren and Ferrari.
This is not the first attempt by a Porsche team to enter the DTM this year. However, his plans were thwarted by the unavailability of a used Porsche 911 GT3 R at a competitive price.
