Prepare for thirteen minutes of fascination with the automotive industry. The team at DK Engineering TV has created a detailed guide for the incredibly rare homologation special Porsche GT1 street version, which is our best look at this rare vehicle. Have you ever wondered how to check the oil in a Porsche GT1 or how to open the rear clamshell? Well, today is your lucky day as we learn every detail about this incredible car.
In the mid-1990s, Porsche decided to compete at the highest level in sports car racing and intended to enter the BPR Global GT Series. The series was previously dominated by cars such as the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40, which were some of the best performing street cars at the time. For entry into the series, an edition of at least 25 copies was required, which led to a small edition of the Porsche GT Street Version or Street Version in English.
Instead of building a racing car from a street car, Porsche decided to develop a perfect racing car and then build a small production on street versions to meet the regulations. This mindset shocked competitors who were quickly outdone by Porsche’s purpose-built GT1 racing car.
The road version of the Porsche GT1 was powered by a water-cooled twin-turbo flat-6 engine that developed 592 hp (441 kilowatts). This impressive engine was paired with a 6-speed manual transmission that transferred all of the power to the massive rear tires. The front chassis was based on the 993 911 while the rear chassis was from the 962 racing car.
This unique part of Porsche history is something you don’t see every day, especially in the details shown in the DK Engineering TV user manual. The inner workings of the Porsche GT1 street version is a special mashup of Porsche 911 993 accents, paired with the exterior design of the 996 generation, traced back from proven racing car platforms, and we can see every single inch.
