IndyCar drivers Patricio O’Ward and Álex Palou have taken to the track at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in an official Formula 1 test with McLaren.
The first images of the drivers in last year’s MCL33 have emerged with O’Ward, who races for McLaren in IndyCar, and Palou who was tipped to be joining the team in the stateside series before a contract dispute led to him staying with Chip Ganassi.
For Palou this is his first time driving a F1 car having competed on the junior ladder in GP3 in 2015 and 2016 and in Formula 2 in 2017. The Spanish driver recently won the IndyCar series finale race at Laguna Seca, and the circuit is close to his hometown in Sant Antoni de Vilamajor, Catalonia.
As revealed yesterday Colton Herta did not take part in the test.
The team has yet to confirm who will be used in their two mandatory practice outings this season and while Oscar Piastri is contracted for 2023 onwards, the team would need permission from Alpine who he is contracted to until the end of the season.
