The official announcement included screenshots of the cars, but our friends at Sony have sent in an additional content pack of high-resolution 4K screenshots – captured on PS5 – that are definitely worth a closer look.

Toyota Supra GT500 ’97 (Castrol Tom’s)

For most of our readers, this car doesn’t need an introduction. The Castrol Tom’s Supra is arguably one of the most iconic vehicles to emerge from the franchise’s original games – alongside other legends like the Suzuki Escudo and the Daihatsu Midget II – the Castrol Toms Supra will flood any old-school Gran Turismo fan with nostalgia.

The 1997 car first became famous for beating the dominant Nissan GT-R that year in the JGTC, but its striking looks and performance quickly made it an international favorite when it debuted in the original Gran Turismo.

Oddly enough, technically the masterful ’97 model is not the same car that was featured in GT1 or GT2.

The 96 model was actually in those first two games and – although it wasn’t as successful in the JGTC as the 97 version – it formed the basis of Toyota’s JGTC program and established the Castrol Tom’s Supra prominently in racing game history.

It was the 97 model that was used in GT5 and GT6, but was missing in GT Sport, so the triumphant return of the car in GT7 is an important milestone in the series’s 25th anniversary. As franchise creator Kazunori Yamauchi told us in our interview last week, he wants players to “remember the feeling they had when they first started playing these games,” and the return of that legend will surely help with that.

Porsche 917 living legend

As much as the Castrol Tom’s Supra looks to the past of the series, the Porsche 917 Living Legend seems to look to the future.

Although most of us take Porsche for granted in GT racing today, the famous brand from Stuttgart was little more than a pipe dream for Gran Turismo players just a few years ago. A decades-long exclusive deal with Electronic Arts resulted in Porsche being largely absent from more serious driving simulators, but that ended for good in 2017.

After its debut in sports, it is clear that Porsche will play a major role in GT7, and the inclusion of the 917 Living Legend in the pre-order content pack is proof of that. Designed in 2013, but presented for the first time in March 2019, Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its famous 917 racing car with the 917 Living Legend, which won Le Mans in 1970.

Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept stealth model

The Mazda RX-Vision GT3 was unveiled to a great roar at the 2019 FIA Gran Turismo Championship World Finals in Monaco and joined GT Sport in May 2020.

Gran Turismo aficionados will find with interest that this particular version is a “stealth model” – a blackened version of the “normal” GT3 car with a carbon fiber body. This is significant as it is a recall to the special edition “Stealth Models” first revealed in the Collector’s Edition of Gran Turismo 5, the carbon fiber versions of famous favorites like Mazda 787B, Nissan GT-R GT500, McLaren included F1 and others.

Assuming the RX-Vision GT3 continues the tradition, expect more power and less weight from the Stealth model for even more power.

There were even diecast models of GT5’s stealth vehicles, so could we see this hit store shelves in a similar fashion?

Variable weather and lighting effects are highlighted in these screenshots and show the dynamic environmental conditions of the new title.

Real-time changes in conditions won’t be available on all tracks – as Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed to us in our last interview – but we can probably assume that it will be seen on at least these three tracks, considering they are in the Screenshot package were included.
