Mercedes selected George Russell to replace Valtteri Bottas for the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship season – but he may have made a mistake by not choosing Lando Norris.
Despite being named Constructors ‘Champion for the eighth year in a row, Toto Wolff and his team were left with bad taste after Max Verstappen secured the drivers’ championship ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
With Bottas now moving to Alfa Romeo Racing, Russell was announced as his successor back in September after replacing Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.
Russell, 23, has since been compared to British 22-year-old Norris, who won 160 points with McLaren, with former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer saying Mercedes may have made a mistake.

“For a guy who has never won a race to have a seven-time world champion down the neck in a Mercedes …
“Then it starts to rain and he’s still off the road a few times, crawling around, but Hamilton, we all know how good he is in the wet, behind him. It was really legendary stuff I think from Norris . “

He wrote: “My goal is to win races and world championships and for the past three years McLaren has shown me that they are capable of building a car in which I can do that.
“I had my first podium with McLaren and I will get my first win with McLaren. Let’s continue what we started.”
