McLaren F1 Team Executive Director of Racing, Andrea Stella, says it’s great to be back on the streets of Monaco, but the team “fought against the clock” to run test runs as the time was reduced in FP1 and FP2.
The UK-based team stole the headlines in Monace before the teams even arrived after releasing a special one-off golf livery for Monaco Grand Prix last Sunday, and they’ll try to maintain their impressive start to the 2021 season and cement third place even further.
Their closest rivals, however Scuderia Ferrari Mission Winnow looked incredibly strong on the streets of Monte Carlo on Thursday when they took a one-two in practice Lando Norris finished the afternoon in sixth and Daniel Ricciardo in the fifteenth.
Although Stella lagged behind Ferrari in both practice sessions, testing in the shortened one-hour session in Monaco was a challenge, according to Stella, but she was happy with the data they had gathered prior to qualifying.
“It’s a great feeling to be back in Monaco, it’s full of history – but it’s also a very challenging place to drive Formula 1 cars!
“With these shortened FP1 and FP2 sessions, you always feel like you are fighting for time to test things – and there is a lot to test here in terms of setting up and understanding the tires.
“Overall, we were able to work through our plan and are satisfied with the data we have collected. Tonight and tomorrow we still have to work on improving the car to make sure we are ready for qualifying, which of course is always important here. “
