McLaren's F1 team demonstrates how his crew prepares the pit lane before a Grand Prix

The Formula 1 pit stop is almost balletic in its precision and coordination and often only lasts two seconds. But to achieve this precision and speed, the team has to do a lot of preparatory work.

The McLaren F1 team just shared a video describing how the team is preparing their pit box ahead of a Grand Prix weekend and firstly shows that the pit box won’t be there when the teams arrive at the track .

As expected, everything starts with measurements. The team marks the corners of the pit in which the racing car wants to park. As you might expect less, the pit box is not perfectly parallel to the pit wall, so the drivers get a small angle when they drive in.

Next, the team puts an adhesive on the asphalt to attach the rubber markings that serve as a visual sign of the pit lane for everyone. Once the rubber is down, the team uses a stencil to paint measurements on the markings to show how far the riders will be from their markings if they pull up to the limit. It is important for the pit crew to stop perfectly on the middle mark, which has to screw in and out screws in milliseconds.

The pit portal or structure that runs over the car and runs the pneumatic hoses and other essentials on either side of the pit box is placed next so that it can be perfectly placed over the pit box. There are also arrows that point to the stop marks to help the driver even more to come to a stop in the right place.

Finally, a center line is added and the wheel cannons are installed so the drivers and pit crew can practice so that during the pit stop in the race everyone is ready to change all four tires as quickly as possible.
