Luxury supercar maker McLaren Automotive’s proprietary arm, McLaren Special Operations (MSO), has unveiled a bespoke Golf Oil-painted McLaren 720S that shines with the brand’s iconic racing colors.
The project is part of the renewed relationship announced last summer when McLaren confirmed the return of Gulf as an official strategic partner and demonstrated the personalization options for McLaren’s supercars

McLaren first partnered with Gulf in Formula 1 and Can-Am from 1968 to 1973. The association was revived in the 1990s with the legendary McLaren F1 GTRs of the GTC Competition Team and won the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and the GT1 class in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1997.
After reuniting in 2020, Gulf became the preferred lubricant supplier for McLaren Automotive that year. All vehicles should be filled with Gulf oil and fuel optimized for high performance engines.
A limited number of customers can only have their McLaren supercars hand-painted by MSO in Golf livery. The 720S unveiled this week is the culmination of a joint project by MSO and Gulf to ensure a perfectly toned range of metallic and solid colors, both of which capture their unique identities.
After several iterations to achieve the perfect finish from McLaren automotive paint technology partner AkzoNobel’s extensive range of high quality automotive paints, the final version is the result of 20 working days of MSO’s artisans alone.
In addition to the legendary colors of blue and orange in racing, MSO has reproduced the color of the Golf in solid orange on the brake calipers. The bespoke interior of this 720S features matching blue and orange stitching with golf logos embroidered on the headrests and painted on the rocker panels.
The famous McLaren steering wheel features a center band that matches the outer stripe in Gulf Solid Orange and Gulf Solid Dark Blue on the visual carbon fiber spokes.
“McLaren Automotive has established itself as a pioneering supercar company in just 10 years, but the McLaren brand has a remarkable history and it’s always great to see customers adopt iconic paint jobs on modern McLaren supercars.

“The 720S in the colors of the Golf celebrates two high-performance brands that have a long history in automotive and racing and have entered into a new strategic partnership to delight customers and fans around the world.
“This project is an example of MSO’s capabilities and reflects the recent full restoration of the McLaren F1 GTR 25R, a car that was driven in the 1990s. The 720S in such an impressive paint job and interior that was worked closely together was developed with Gulf, this perfectly shows the potential for our customers to work with the knowledgeable team at MSO to personalize their McLaren. “
Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive
“Gulf and McLaren have a relationship that dates back to 1968 and is one of the most successful and recognized partnerships. We are proud to have worked closely with McLaren Special Operations to bring the brilliant racing blue and fluro orange golf colors to the 720S showcase.
“McLaren is a brand that shares our future aspirations and our drive to innovate. We look forward to growing our relationship in the years to come.”
Mike Jones, CEO of Gulf Oil International
The 720S remains the benchmark supercar. With a McLaren V8 engine with two turbochargers, which generates up to 720 hp and 770 Nm of torque, it can accelerate from standstill to 100 km / h in just 2.9 seconds and has a top speed of 341 km / h.
Its carbon fiber Monocage II contributes to a class-leading lightest dry weight of 1,283 kg, while the Proactive Chassis Control II suspension and active aerodynamics help unleash this sensational performance both on the road and on the track.
