Ferrari has certainly gained some momentum in its battle with McLaren for P3. The Italian team has shown a very good performance in the last two races, leaving its rivals behind. However, former F1 driver Mark Webber believes the drivers of both teams can be the deciding factor in securing P3 in the championship.

He believes Ferrari stepped up its game in the 2021 season. He also mentioned that McLaren had missed some big opportunities in the last few races.

Mark Webber comments on the battle between Ferrari and McLaren for P3
Webber was a guest on the F1 Nation podcast and mentioned that it’s hard to choose between old rivals. The former Red Bull driver said that the McLaren might be more sensitive to the route than the Italian team.

“I think Ferrari will have a bit of an upswing towards the end of the year. I think we know McLaren is behind Daniel’s win, which was great, and Lando, you know, almost in Russia.
So McLaren missed some big opportunities. But in general it was a tremendous fight between the two. So I don’t know the McLaren is a little track sensitive as it didn’t show up in Turkey. It likes lower downforce and they were quick at Monza. Russia is a bit in the middle, so they were very quick there with a pole from Norris, ”said Webber.

Mark went on by mentioning that he hopes McLaren will make it through this season. You have come a long way in the past few seasons. But he said the British team is operationally better while Ferrari has the better driver pairing.

“I want them to benefit from the designers in third place. I think operationally I know they had a couple of bad pit stops, but their starts are good. And I think they are very good internally at communicating and reflecting on their mistakes.

Ferrari, I think your two drivers have an advantage over Daniel and Lando at the moment. Daniel still doesn’t fire quite the way we want and doesn’t bring any more. But I think operationally, McLaren just has a little more calm and firepower, ”concluded Markus.
After the race in Turkey, Ferrari is only 7.5 points behind McLaren in the battle for P3 in the constructors’ championship.
