McLaren rules out a return to sports car racing in 2023

McLaren CEO Zak Brown has ruled out the team’s return to sports car racing due to unfinished deals in both Formula 1 and IndyCar.

The remodeling process at McLaren also included expansion to other motorsport series besides Formula 1 and a return to the WEC and Le Mans was tacitly suggested as the next area of interest for them.

However, Brown is aware that there is still much to be done in both Formula 1 and IndyCar, where winning the World Championship again is still the ultimate goal, despite having made great strides during his tenure.

“We’re constantly reviewing other forms of motorsport,” Brown said.

“But in 2023 we will definitely not be doing sports car racing. It is checked.

“At the moment we’re not where we want to be in Formula 1. We’re about halfway through our journey. We want to stay very focused on that.

“We’re not where we want to be at IndyCar, which wins championships. We want to stay focused on that.

“That’s why we’re looking at other forms of motorsport. If we were to make sports cars, it would definitely not be in 2023. “

What. A race.

While McLaren’s presence at IndyCar hasn’t resulted in silverware yet, Brown likes what he sees from a commercial standpoint.

“IndyCar achieved what it did for our racing team,” Brown continued.

“North America is very important to McLaren, the majority of our partners.

“Participating in IndyCar enables us to expand the North American market. You see our partners like BAT and Mission, most recently Darktrace, who are part of our Formula 1 team in IndyCar.

“At the same time Arrow is expanding its involvement in motorsport, they are obviously the Indycar team’s title partners, have joined us in Formula 1 to reach the other parts of the world that Formula 1 does.

“It worked very well commercially.”
