McLaren Racing – going retro

McLaren Racing - going retro

Our new Gulf Merchandise range is such a throwback that it’s got us playing The Chain on repeat. In fact, McLaren and Gulf go so far back that the Fleetwood Mac classic wasn’t even released.

Some of the most illustrious moments in our history were delivered during our partnership with Gulf, and this range is a celebration of those memories – an encapsulation of each win that brings the past into the present and allows you to wear it.

GULF Collection

Celebrating the historic GULF x McLaren partnership. There’s something for everyone.

The two brands first linked up in 1968 and produced instant success, with Denny Hulme winning the 1968 Can-Am title. Can-Am success was a constant theme in the early years of the partnership: Bruce clinched the championship in 1969, Hulme again in 1970 and Peter Revson in 1971.

Some of our earliest Formula 1 triumphs occurred during the collaboration, with McLaren finishing as Vice-Champions in 1968, a season where we delivered podiums and victories for the very first time. It was also during this period that we entered the Indy 500 for the first time, in 1970.

After the initial partnership ended in 1973, it was renewed in the 1990s for the Le Mans 24 hours, with the McLaren F1 GTR running in the iconic Gulf colors throughout the decade.

The partnership was brought into the 21st century when the two brands reunited in 2020. This culminated in the Gulf-liveried MCL35M that we ran at the Monaco Grand Prix, where Lando scored a podium and added a new chapter to our mutual story.

Gulf is ingrained in our history, and these memories have inspired our new collection. Simple, minimalistic pieces that are elevated by the finer details and underpinned by Gulf’s racing blue colourway and that classic papaya stripe.

The wide-eyed smile on Lando’s face as he went through the clothes rack, inspecting each individual piece was enough to satisfy us of a job well done. “We know Lando Norris is a big admirer of the collection,” Gulf told us at the photoshoot. “He tried on some of the key pieces at our recent photo shoot and we’re sure the fans will love it too.”

Our partnership with Gulf spanned many series, so we needed a varied collection to match… The collection is headlined by a new take on last year’s best-selling hoodie and the classic Gulf tee. But if you prefer something on the smarter side of smart casual, there is the alternate option of a polo shirt and sweatshirt.

For the outer layer, you can choose from track jackets, fleece jackets and elegant bombers. And, of course, no Gulf collection would be complete without a vintage baseball cap from our friends at New Era.

But let’s get real here, this collection will sell itself, and only those of you with willpower of steel would have made it to the bottom of this page without adding several of these items to your basket already. But come on, willpower is overrated.
