Do it twice.

Almost a year after Lando’s magical first podium finish in Spielberg, we’re returning to Austria to double our fun. Last year we got two races at the Red Bull Ring and 2021 will be no different, with the Styrian Grand Prix this weekend and the Austrian Grand Prix just a week later.

Another 14 days in the foothills of Styria are a tempting prospect and to prepare you, we have put together a race preview with all the important information you need. It contains the latest thoughts from Lando, Daniel and McLaren F1 team boss Andreas Seidl, news about another merchandise bundle drop and a competition to win tickets for one of the biggest motorsport events of the year.

What you say

“I’m really looking forward to racing in Austria for the next two weeks. It’s a special place because this is where I got my first podium in Formula 1. We had two strong results in a row in Austria last season, so I hope we can see two similar weekends this time around. We can’t overtake each other as a lot of things are different from last year, like the car and the tires. We will go into these two races with our heads down and try step by step to achieve two results, as we did in France, but also work hard to improve our qualifying performance. “

“I’m looking forward to another race on the jumping power and a double in Austria. It could get wet – maybe even on both weekends. We could get two very different races, you never know. I think it’s just a good opportunity for me to keep working on the car and myself. Hopefully we can build on the performance we had in France and find some consistency that we were looking for. We’ll try to get a few more points for the team in Austria. It’s tight out there and every weekend counts, so we’ll push. “

“After a good race in France we are leaving the first race of the triple header with decisive points for the constructors’ championship. Now we are shifting our focus to Austria and preparing to race in the Styrian hills for the next two weekends.

“Two races in a row on the same track are an interesting challenge as we can have two very different races due to certain conditions such as the weather. So it is important that we treat each race as a single event with the same preparation even though it is the same track. As a team, we must continue to work hard to maintain good reliability and to remain in charge of parts management during this intense time.

“The battle with our competitors remains fiercely contested, with very little separating us. We have to be ready to maximize all chances in the coming races. It is also important that we stay focused and work on our performance in every session to increase our chances of getting the best possible qualification and then give ourselves a chance to fight for points. There is a lot to play in the next two races and we will keep pushing. “

What the statistics say

McLaren are at the top with Ferrari as the constructor with the most wins in Austria, although if you include Mercedes’ Grand Prix win last year, they would also be at the top with six wins.

Lando has never finished outside the top 6 in F1 races in Austria. A special highlight was his third place at the season opener of the Austrian Grand Prix last year – at just 20 years of age, he was the third youngest driver to make a podium.

He also posted the fastest lap at the end of the race and he will still need to do some fast laps this weekend if he is to continue his run into the top 10 shoots in every qualifying this season. Daniel also earned an Austrian podium with his third place in 2017 and was among the top 10 five times.

What to look out for

The names of the Grands Prix may be different, but the track won’t be. Don’t be fooled, however, identical breeds are highly unlikely. The weather will certainly play a role in the two weeks and the teams will be prepared for the second race at the Red Bull Ring with a wealth of data from the Styrian Grand Prix.

The ring consists of two halves: the first consists of three straights and the second has many curves. Teams have to find a compromise between low drag for the first half of the lap and high downforce for the second half – they can’t have both!

The ring also has a reputation for destroying front wings, bottoms and diffusers. If the teams thought some of the curbs at Circuit Paul Ricard were bad, then those here can really bite – not just the car, but the back pockets as the teams try to avoid costly repairs that eat up this year’s budget, that through the new upper cost limit. Given the requirements of the ring and the fact that it is the last leg of a triple header, it cannot be ruled out that the teams could look for parts at the Austrian Grand Prix.
