McLaren Racing - Everything you need to know about the Spanish Grand Prix

‘Aren’t you entertained? Are you not entertained Isn’t that why you’re here?

Spaniards, Spaniards, Spaniards … ‘

The Formula 1 gladiators will compete again at the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, just a few days after they were eliminated in Portimão. The arena? The fascinating Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. As a frequent pre-season proving ground, it’s a familiar F1 hangout, but with pre-season testing only taking place in Bahrain this year, we had to wait a little longer for our last visit to Spain.

To find out what’s in store for you, take a look at our race preview. Once again it is the thoughts of Lando Norris, Daniel Riccardo and McLaren F1 team boss Andreas Seidl. It also has clues on what to look out for this weekend and news about merch that is as magical as it is functional.

What you say

“I’m looking forward to going to Spain! We seem to be in good shape right now so we’re just trying to keep this up, keep scoring and things like that. It’s still early in the championship so another weekend like Portugal would be nice. We have to go further, keep trying to score a few points and another good result in qualifying. We’ll see what we can do and what the car is like, but I’m confident that we can have a good race. ”

“I’m really looking forward to getting back on track in Spain. After visiting two unique circuits in Imola and Portimão, it is good to do a few laps on a circuit that I know very well. All the teams test so much in Barcelona that we pretty much know what to expect right away. When I’m so familiar with the track and the high level of grip, I can really push the car and not have too many other factors to worry about. I feel more and more comfortable with every racetrack and I’m really excited to see what we can do in the next races. ”

“After a great recovery from a difficult Saturday in Portimão, we’re starting the Spanish Grand Prix to have a somewhat quieter weekend. Every double headed ball comes with logistical challenges and the team, both at the factory and on the track, have done an excellent job making sure we are well prepared to race again in Portugal anytime soon.

“As always, qualifying is an important part of the weekend, but especially at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, where overtaking can be difficult. We got off to a strong start to the season, but we know we can’t get complacent, especially when we see how close the competition is. Lando had a great start to the season and is staying in good shape while Daniel is really starting to show his confidence in the car. Last Sunday’s fight in the points shows what progress he has made. We look forward to seeing what he can do when he is completely comfortable.

“Another weekend, another chance to collect good points. Let’s go racing! “

What the statistics say

All three. We finished third in the constructors ‘championship three races this season, while Lando took the same place in the drivers’ championship. Additionally, Lando comes into play this weekend after finishing in the top five in all three previous starts this season. That includes his fifth place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year and his run extends to four. McLaren is now the only team to have achieved a colon in every race so far. Needless to say, we will endeavor to continue this great start to the campaign at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. It’s a place where we’ve been successful with four of our eight Grand Prix wins in Spain. Daniel also attended the F1 podium here: 2014 and 2017 – the former his first in F1.

What to look out for

The real pecking order. After three races we already have a pretty good idea of who is where, but things will become even clearer after this weekend. With all the kilometers and data collected over the years on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya – both from races and tests – coupled with the combination of high and slow speed and the weather that looks fair this weekend , this route will be a real barometer of performance.

However, the track teams and drivers will find that this year is a little different than what they have become used to. Changes to Turn 10 have resulted in the left-hander reverting to a gentler left-hander, similar to the original layout before it was rebuilt to a tighter turn in 2004 by F1 circuit guru Hermann Tilke to increase overtaking opportunities. The changes also include a larger drainage area and therefore improve the safety of the curve.

What to wear

Why pull a rabbit out of your hat when you can pull a backpack out of your pocket?

That’s right, if you want to perform the magic trick that brought Penn and Teller to fame, you need to get your hands on the McLaren F1 Packable Backpack. Not only does it fold up into the size of a wallet, but it is also one of the most stylish ways to carry your things around. Just don’t try to fold the backpack when it contains your belongings – if you do and it still fits in your pocket then that’s really magical.

Plus one

Do you have a burning question for the team? Make sure you send it to #TheFifthDriver ahead of this weekend and we’ll answer the best during a live commentary on McLaren.com and the McLaren app. If that wasn’t enough, any questions answered will be included in our Question Time feature on McLaren.com.

Oh, and did we mention the prices? Yes, there are plenty of them up for grabs too. The Portuguese Grand Prix Question of the Week came from @hallefrisco_, who packed a McLaren water bottle signed by Lando and Daniel. She wanted to know if members of the racing team have the time to see the cities they travel to on race weekends. Tom Briggs, our team leader of the support crew, responded to this question and revealed the art of “turbo sightseeing”.
