McLaren Introduces Career Development Scholarship

McLaren and Creative Access launch a grant to enable people from underrepresented groups to access and advance in the creative industries.

The scholarship is a new fund to promote talent from underrepresented communities who want to work in the creative industries or advance their careers but are currently prevented from doing so due to their financial status.

Creative Access surveyed more than 1,900 people working or pursuing careers in the creative industries to examine how financial barriers affect career progression. The results show how crucial the scholarship will be in enabling people from underrepresented groups to gain access to and progress in the sector.

The most important findings include:

• Slightly more than three quarters (77%) did not apply for a job due to the associated high living or travel costs
• Over a third (35%) have turned down job offers due to financial obstacles
• 76% of 18 to 25 year olds and 79% of 26 to 35 year olds did not apply for a job for financial reasons and 69% of 18 to 25 year olds did not accept a job
• The most common financial burdens affecting career advancement are cited as prohibitive living, commuting and moving costs
• 47% of respondents said that financial obstacles had “severely” impaired their career development – 61% of those with an underrepresented socio-economic background.
• 80% of people with disabilities did not apply for a job and 59% did not accept a job offer due to financial obstacles
• Financial status prevented 82% of people with an underrepresented socio-economic background from applying for jobs and 58% from accepting a job offer.

The top 5 creative industries in which potential candidates have not applied for a position for financial reasons are:

1st film – 86%
2. Music – 86%
3. Theater – 85%
4. Television – 82%
5. Museums & Galleries – 81%

The scholarship is the first initiative of the partnership between Creative Access and McLaren Racing, formed this June as part of the McLaren Racing Engage Alliance, which aims to diversify talent in motorsport.

The application window for the first round of scholarships opens on Wednesday, October 27th and ends on Wednesday, December 8th. Applicants can apply for £ 250, £ 500, £ 750 or £ 1000 grants by logging into an existing Creative Access account or by registering at creativeaccess.org.uk.

“At McLaren Racing, we strongly believe that everyone, regardless of financial status or background, should have access to the same resources and opportunities in our industry,” said Zak Brown. “Leading an integrative and diverse team is an ongoing and evolving process to which we have committed ourselves over the long term. The grant is an important first step in our plans for our workforce to be more representative of the population by 2030, and we are proud to be taking this step on our journey together with Creative Access.

“As part of our strategic alliance known as McLaren Racing Engage and the F1 # WeRaceAsOne campaign, we are in a unique position where we can influence the broader motorsport industry to diversify and diversify talent at all levels and across all functions at the same time in our own culture of inclusion at McLaren Racing.

“Through McLaren Racing Engage and our partnership with Creative Access, we hope to inspire and nurture the next generation of creative talent in our sport and remove the barriers that would otherwise prevent them from using their skills and adding value to a racing team how to create McLaren. ” . “

“We’re disappointed – but not surprised – to see confirmation of what we already knew,” added Josie Dobrin, CEO, Creative Access. At Creative Access, we understand the importance of breaking these barriers, which is why we are proud to have launched this new scholarship with our partner McLaren Racing to encourage talent from underrepresented communities to embark on their creative careers everything, they are the future of the industry. “
