Sometimes stars line up and dreams come true, as shown in Carfection’s latest film, which brings together the McLaren F1, Porsche 911 GT1 and Mercedes CLK GTR.
While the term “hypercar” was coined much later, it would be a bit of an understatement to simply refer to these insane speed machines as supercars.
In the first installment of this rather special series, Carfection’s Henry Catchpole reviews the McLaren F1, chassis # 037, which is beautifully preserved in its original specification.

Apparently this is also the only McLaren F1 with a completely new Alcantara interior. The cabin still has the original equipment. The owners used towels and custom-made panels of fabric to protect the upholstery and originality of the car.
The BMW 6.1-liter V12 with a naturally aspirated engine develops 627 hp and 651 Nm of torque and is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission. Given that the epic V12 only needs to move 1,138 kg, it still impresses with its throttle response and performance across the rev range. After all, the McLaren F1 still holds the title of the fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine.
But the F1 is more than just an engine. It’s a packaging triumph with its compact footprint, central driving position and obsessive attention to detail to make everything as light as possible. There is no traction control, ABS or power steering, just a unique focus on building the best driver car ever.
