McLaren driver Lando Norris put in a sensational performance at the Austrian Grand Prix and finished third in the race. He started the race from the front row and while defending his P2 against Red Bull’s Checo Perez, the young Brit pushed the Mexican off the track at the end of Turn 4.

The incident was investigated and the stewards gave Norris a five-second penalty. He also received two penalty points on his driver’s license. This increased him to 10 points, which means that he is only two points away from a race suspension.

Even if the Briton’s penalty points drop to eight by the time the paddock reaches Silverstone, the situation has left McLaren in a solution. Therefore, team boss Andreas Seidl has named the former McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne as a likely replacement for Norris if he receives a race suspension.

In an interview with RTL, the McLaren team boss commented on the incident between Checo and Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix. He also expressed concern about losing his star driver to a race suspension.
“It’s not comforting. There is a fundamental risk, ”said Seidl of Norris on thin ice.
“It cannot be in the sense of Formula 1 that a driver would have to suspend a race for such an incident”

Seidl concluded, “McLaren has an agreement with Mercedes regarding their replacement drivers.” The report goes on to say, “His ‘first choice’ is former McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne”.
The Belgian had driven for McLaren in 2016 and 2017 and had seven top 10 results and 25 points.

Can McLaren continue to challenge Mercedes?
The team from Woking and Norris were able to overtake the Mercedes in Austria. And they also crossed the finish line in the race for the final podium before Hamilton.
However, Mclaren is assured that her performance was likely track dependent. They know that there is still a tempo deficit with the German team that will not be covered this season.
