The McLaren Group has categorically denied a news story stating that it has been acquired by Audi.
On Monday, Autocar reported that Audi had bought the McLaren Group and would take full control of the company’s road car and racing operations, including the McLaren F1 team.
The McLaren Group issued a statement a few hours later stating, “McLaren Group is aware of a media report that it has been sold to Audi. This is completely inaccurate and McLaren is trying to remove the story.
McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other automobile manufacturers, but the ownership structure of the McLaren Group has not changed. “
Audi’s parent company Volkswagen is negotiating with Formula 1 about a future entry. F1 hopes that its next engine regulation, due to be introduced in 2025, will help get the manufacturer to join.
According to Motorsport.com, some sort of collaboration is being considered, with Volkswagen considering options for an Audi entry with McLaren or a Porsche entry with Red Bull.
