If you are familiar with racing in Formula 1, you will know about the Monaco Grand Prix this coming weekend. And most likely you also know something about McLaren’s collaboration with the Gulf Oil Company. While this is the first time McLaren’s F1 racing car features the iconic Gulf blue and orange color scheme, it doesn’t necessarily take the technical know-how to understand why the 720S has that livery too. This picture gallery explains it anyway.

This McLaren 720S Gulf Oil Edition is a special edition commemorating McLaren’s renewed collaboration with Gulf Oil. It was designed by its own McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division.

And since the Formula 1 car MCL35M is in the legendary Golf color theme, the 720S is also being executed in a similar version of the famous paintwork for the occasion.

While the F1 car will come with this one-of-a-kind livery, McLaren aims to keep its glory with this limited edition 720S that sports the same colors as the Golf livery.

In the truest sense of the word, this is referred to as a limited edition because it took 20 days to create this special edition. It is hand-painted in collaboration with the Dutch paint specialist AkzoNobel.

Plus, it’s a street legal car that, unlike the F1 car, can actually be bought. Additionally, the sports car maker’s relationship with its lubricant supplier is very important, and this 720S seals the bond even further.

If you look closely, you’ll notice the solid orange color on the rims of the wheels and even the brake calipers. Apart from the Gulf logo and the racing stripes, this is the only external change.

Inside follows a similar theme with the golf logos embroidered on the headrests. The seats have orange stitching, while the carbon fiber door sills have a Gulf logo glued to them.

They know that car connoisseurs and enthusiasts love something exotic and expensive. And Mclaren and Gulf have certainly tried to cater for and take advantage of that demand by bringing in this collector’s item.
