While Max Verstappen continues to have a slight eight point lead over seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton on the track, there’s one category that Verstappen can’t touch Hamilton in and that’s on the bench.
In a report released by Forbes today, Hamilton leads – and laps much of the field – in total earnings with an estimated $ 62 forecast for 2021. Verstappen ranks second at $ 42 million.
Fernando Alonso, who hasn’t won an F1 race since 2013 and hasn’t even made the podium since 2014, proves what you’ve been doing lately only matters as much as he finished third with $ 25 million checks in the money list.

The list, Forbes says, is really a best estimate based on a number of sources including “financial documents, legal documents, and press leaks, and conversations with industry insiders and advisors”. Forbes is also quick to point out that its numbers don’t include taxes or brokerage fees.
Unlike most professional sports in the US, where agents and even teams regularly post contract numbers, Formula 1 is still a pretty closed society in that regard and actual numbers are not published. In Formula 1, drivers usually work for a base salary plus bonuses for wins and a place in the final standings.
The driver who, according to Forbes, makes the most of these bonuses is McLaren’s Lando Norris. Norris reportedly drives for a base salary of $ 3 million but is en route for an additional $ 6 million based on his third place in the F1 Drivers ‘Championship and McLaren’s third place in the F1 Constructors’ Championship.
Sure, it’s not perfect, but who doesn’t like an F1 top 10 list?
