A 2010 McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 car driven to victory by Sir Lewis Hamilton was auctioned.

Sold by RM Sotheby’s, this is the first time that a Formula 1 race winner driven by the seven-time champion has been offered to the public.

The auction took place as part of the British Grand Prix weekend, with the MP4-25A taking to the track after the new Sprint Qualifying.

Race-winning legacy

Chassis number MP4-25A-01 was the first car built for the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship. During the season it was driven by both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

Powered by a naturally aspirated Mercedes-Benz 2.4L V8 engine, the MP4-25A-01 achieved a number of important results for the McLaren team.

Hamilton drove the car and finished an impressive runner-up in the 2010 Chinese Grand Prix, followed by a fifth place in Monaco.

However, the car’s greatest moment came at the Turkish Grand Prix. Despite a long pit stop, Hamilton was able to take the lead due to a collision between the Red Bulls. Then he held Button off to take the win.

Ready for the route again

At the end of the 2010 Formula 1 season, the car was put into storage.

The car was thoroughly restored by McLaren Racing Heritage and Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. Detailed work has been done to get the car back on the road so the new owner can use it in anger.

This extended to the x-raying of safety-critical parts, with the work lasting from 2019 to 2021. All parts were replaced as needed, with track tests being carried out.

The MP4-25A-01 was auctioned off with a large crowd at Silverstone and fetched an impressive 4.836 million pounds ($ 6.658 million US) when the hammer fell.

The new owner now owns a piece of rare British motorsport history. More importantly, it can be used again in anger on a racetrack.
