While Lewis Hamilton continues to make history this year by potentially winning an eighth eighth F1 driver title, he also appears to be pondering goals beyond individual success.
The Mercedes F1 driver recently revealed in an interview that he hopes to help his team-mate George Russell become world champions someday next year. The 36-year-old Brit wants to help his younger compatriot learn team dynamics and lead him to future successes.
Lewis Hamilton wants George Russell to be the next F1 champion
Speaking to Motorsport.com and some of the other motorsport media outlets, Lewis Hamilton said, “I’m in a different place. I really want him to be successful. There will come a point where I will not be able to continue this sport. He’s my teammate and he’ll be the next Brit I want to see to win a world championship. “
However, Hamilton insisted that while he was dying to help George Russell improve, he still wanted to stay competitive and “win by the wayside”. “So I very much hope that while we are going to compete and I want to win on the track, I can positively influence my behavior in the team as he rummages through the data or just drives on the track,” added the Mercedes F1 driver.
Lewis Hamilton expects Russell to give him a good fight
Lewis Hamilton expects George Russell to join Mercedes F1 next season with a similar mentality as he followed the McLaren F1 challenge in 2007 with two-time driver champion Fernando Alonso. The 36-year-old said: “He will want to be quick. He’ll come up and win and want to do all the things that you do when you take on a new role. I remember when I went up against myself [Fernando] Alonso, of course I wanted to beat him in the first race. I appreciate and expect George to have this mentality. Otherwise he’s not a winner, you see? I assume that he will have that mentality. “
The two drivers will next be seen in action this weekend at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, where Hamilton will resume his title challenge with Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen. The Dutchman currently leads the British by eight points in the championship, with only two races remaining in the season.
