Lando Norris admits McLaren F1 team will be with their performance in qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix on Friday, largely due to her poor free practice performance earlier in the day.
The British driver was the fastest in free practice on 15th.
Norris says that both he and his teammate Daniel Ricciardo stand behind both Scuderia Ferrari Driver, you are right behind both of them Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc and will try to stay ahead of them for the rest of the weekend.
“I think we have to be happy with qualifying because we had quite a problem in FP1 this morning,” said Norris. “After making some good improvements in qualifying, I felt a lot safer with the car.
“We would have liked to have been ahead of the Ferraris, but we have to finish P8 and P9 today because they were faster. We are in a good position to fight them tomorrow. “
“We can be satisfied with that this morning” – Daniel Ricciardo
Teammate Ricciardo agreed with Norris and the Australian is happy to make it into Q3 after struggling earlier in practice.
Ricciardo starts ninth after qualifying just 0.059 seconds behind his teammate, but the gap to the main rivals has been less than the Australian expected and McLaren is in a good position to beat Ferrari during Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying and attacking the main race on Sunday’s Brazil.
“It’s only an eight and a nine, but from where we were this morning we can be satisfied with it,” said Ricciardo. “We didn’t ride the soft before, but I had the feeling that we didn’t have a lot of pace either.
“It felt better on the soft and getting both cars in Q3 is not a bad afternoon. I know it’s at the bottom of the top ten, but the gap is a lot closer than I thought.
“We still have to get them on track, but we’re there, we’re fighting and we can put some pressure on them now. We’ll try to go up from here, but the step we took from this morning to tonight was pretty good. “
