Lando Norris found it to be a better than expected start to the Qatar Grand Prix At the weekend, the Brit finished the day with the fifth fastest time on the Losail International Circuit.
the McLaren F1 team Rider started the weekend by placing his MCL35M in tenth place in the morning, but in the afternoon he was on pace, finishing less than half a second behind the pacesetter Valtteri Bottas.
And Norris says it’s been a good start in Qatar, especially after he and the team expected more problems than actually occurred, and it encourages him to start the rest of the weekend.
“A good start to the weekend,” said Norris. “In a way, more positive than we expected, I think because of the type of routing we have here.
“I think we were expecting a few more problems and possibly more difficulties than we had. I think there are still some weaknesses we have to work on, but overall it’s a solid start.
“I like the track, it’s a lot of fun, especially as a night session – we haven’t had a night session for a long time. It’s fast, it’s high-speed, and it’s a good challenge. “
“We didn’t really make any progress in the second session” – Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo says he will watch Norris’ sessions and learn what he can from the Brit after battling for the pace versus his teammate.
The Australian failed to make it into the top ten in either session, finishing eleventh in the morning and a low fourteenth in the afternoon, with Ricciardo feeling like he wasn’t making any progress between sessions and was just going backwards.
Despite his poor performance on Friday, Ricciardo is hoping to be in the top ten in qualifying on Saturday afternoon for the very first Qatar Grand Prix.
“This route is fun. The first impression is that it’s good because it’s fluid and pretty fast, ”said Ricciardo. “We didn’t really make any progress in the second session. We changed the car a little to experiment with a few things, but it was probably two steps away, so we still have a little bit to find.
“Lando was more promising and we can learn a little from this car. I was a little off in the first sector so I have something to do there – but I’m not worried, just a couple of things to check out tonight. In terms of competitiveness, I think Ferrari will be there tomorrow and Alpha Tauri looked quick.
“Hopefully we can find a little more for Saturday.”
